A day we will NEVER forget...the day we met The Golden Throat, Mr. Chick Hearn.
I still remember it as if it was just yesterday.
My cousin Peter and I were walking around inside the Great Western Forum, taking full advantage of the extra pregame time we earned by weaving in and out of L.A. traffic.
We wanted to absorb the atmosphere and maybe even get lucky and sneak our way down to watch the players warm up.
While looking for a discrete route away from aisle ushers we spot Chick Hearn and Stu Lantz (AKA Chicken Stew at the time). We instinctively make fools of ourselves by mimicking inflatable balloon air dancers in hopes that we grab their attention, never realizing in our wildest dreams that in a few seconds this act would become the Mona Lisa of our Lakers memory museum.
Chick and Stu were in the broadcast section 10 rows up studying pregame stats. Stu, heavily involved in his work, waved us off but Chick waved us in. Chick Hearn took the time to personally greet us! He shook our hands and signed our program! He made the time from his pregame routine to welcome us to the Forum. This moment alone cemented our love for the greatest basketball announcer to ever touch a mic.
We miss you Chick. Thank you for taking the time to personally welcome us to your home.
